Monroe College Practical Nurse Certificate Review

The practical nursing program at Monroe College is quick and comprehensive. The
program is divided into three semesters and lasts just under a year. Full-time attendance is a course load of thirteen credits each semester.


In addition to allowing students to acquire a Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate, Monroe College has programs that will move directly from the LPN to RN or LPN to BSN programs.


The LPN to RN degree track at Monroe is called the 1+1 program.  This takes two years to complete on a full-time status. Successful completion of this program earns an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree (AAS) in Nursing . The LPN to BSN degree track is referred to as the 1+1+1 program at Monroe College. The Licensed Practical Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing would take three years.


Admission to the practical nursing program requires:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prerequisite courses of Biology, Chemistry and Algebra with a C+ minimum grade in each
  • An Overall GPA of at least 3.0
  • A passing Score on the ATI-T.E.A.S.


Applicants to the practical nursing program also need to possess a certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support. Malpractice insurance and medical clearance must be obtained, to participate in the certificate program.


Once accepted to the program, the tuition for the practical nurse program is $598/credit on a part-time basis. Full time students pay a tuition of  $7176/semester. Monroe College practical nursing certificate program is the most expensive out of the three schools in the Bronx that provide LPN programs. However, Monroe College practical nurses pass the NCLEX-PN at a rate of 89.7%. This is both above the state and national average for the exam.
